The Greyfriars Abbey ( Swedish Klostret i Ystad or Gråbrödraklostret i Ystad ) is a former Franciscan monastery in the Swedish town of Ystad . It is now used as a museum . Services are also held in the monastery church of St. Peter .

The monastery is located in the northern part of downtown Ystad.

history

The monastery was founded in 1267. A four-wing complex was created. In the course of the Reformation , the Franciscans were expelled in 1532. The north and west wings were demolished, and a hospital was established in the east wing , which existed until 1777. This was followed by the establishment of a state-owned distillery , after which the building was used as a granary. In 1876 the city of Ystad acquired the property known as the ruined monastery. There were calls for the facility to be demolished. Ultimately, however, it was decided to keep it. In the years from 1909 to 1912, the monastery complex was fundamentally repaired. A museum and a library were created. The building complex has been standing as Byggnadsminne since 1996 under monument conservation.

The monastery church of St. Peter served as a parish church until the 1960s. It was renovated and donated to the city of Ystad for international cultural work. Today it is used for museum purposes and for church services. In the front part of the church there is an organ from the German organ building workshop Georges Heintz ( Schiltach in the Black Forest). It has six registers , playable on two manuals (range: C – f 3 ) and pedal (C – f 1 ).

Several gardens were created around the monastery complex. In 2002 the artist Maria Björklund created the rose garden. In addition, an apple garden was created in which, in addition to apple trees, there are also fig, pear, almond and walnut trees as well as lilac and mulberry bushes. Further gardens are the cabbage garden, the herb garden and the peony garden, which is located behind the monastery pond.
