Sandaun ( Tok Pisin for sunset ( English sundown )), formerly West Sepik , is a large, economically underdeveloped province in western Papua New Guinea . The province borders the Bismarck Sea to the north and the Indonesian province of Papua to the west . The capital of Sandaun is Vanimo .

Settlement is concentrated in the coastal region around Aitape and the Torricelli Mountains .
In addition to the 95 local languages and the lingua franca Tok Pisin , the Malay language is widespread.
