population

The Huli people have lived in this area for over 1000 years. First contacts with Europeans were not made until 1936 and with official authorities in 1951. The people speak Huli and Tok Pisin . More than 60% are illiterate, alcoholism is widespread, despite the prohibition prescribed.

economy

The locals traditionally lived from shifting cultivation and hunting. As part of the Papua New Guinea LNG Project , gas fields have been developed in the area since 2010 - the "Hides" gas field is around half an hour's drive away. The economic upturn is not yet accompanied by an improvement in the infrastructure, so in 2013 there was still no bank in the city.
