Bart Philemon

Bart Philemon (born April 16, 1945 in the village of Butibam near Lae ) is a Papua New Guinean politician. He is chairman of the New Generation Party .

Bart Philemon attended the University of Papua New Guinea for a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduating, he worked in the aviation industry and was Deputy General Manager of Air Niugini , the national airline of Papua New Guinea , from 1973 to 1980 . From 1982 to 1986 he was chairman of the National Airlines Commission. Bart Philemon was a member of the Morobe Province Parliament from 1984 to 1988. Philemon was director of the South Pacific Festival of Arts in 1980 and chairman of the South Pacific Games Foundation at the 1991 South Pacific Games .

Before winning the Lae constituency in the fifth general election to the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea in 1992 , Philemon was a businessman in the food industry. In 1995, Bart Philemon co-founded the National Alliance Party .

From 1992 to 2002 Philemon held various ministerial posts in the Julius Chan , Bill Skate and Mekere Morauta governments . In 2002 he became Minister of Finance for the Michael Somare government . In 2006 Philemon lost the ministerial office and was expelled from the cabinet. He was accused of not using funds as directed by the government. The National Business Association of Papua New Guinea, chambers of commerce and companies, however, recognized Philemon's efforts to maintain budgetary discipline after years of mismanagement.

On August 8, 2011, Bart Philemon became Minister of Public Service and Sports in the government of Peter O'Neill .
