Sir Vincent Serei Eri , GCMG (born September 12, 1936 in Moveave , Gulf Province , Papua New Guinea , † May 25, 1993 in Port Moresby ) was a Papua New Guinean politician and writer .

biography

After attending school, he completed a teaching degree at the University of Papua New Guinea and then worked as a teacher before he was appointed director of education. In 1975 he was appointed the country's first consul general in Australia and, after sovereignty , was given the title of High Commissioner on September 16, 1975 . He held this office until 1979.

In 1986 he founded the People's Action Party (PAP) with Ted Diro and was elected as its candidate for the House of Assembly .

On February 27, 1990, he was appointed governor-general to succeed Sir Ignatius Kilage, who died on December 31, 1989 , and took over from the incumbent governor-general Dennis Young . At the same time he was named Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George by Queen Elizabeth II .

A few months later he created a constitutional crisis after the now deputy prime minister and his party colleague Ted Diro were charged with corruption and found guilty. According to the constitution, he should have fired Diro, but he did not. This led to a fierce controversy, which ultimately led to the resignation of the governor-general. Finally, Prime Minister Rabbie Namaliu drafted an official request to Queen Elizabeth II asking for Eri's replacement. On October 4, 1991, Eri resigned before an appropriate official replacement. The office of the incumbent governor general took over again until the appointment of Wiwa Korowi parliament speaker Dennis Young.

Eri was also active as a writer and for a long time was considered the first local to write a novel in English in 1970, "The Crocodile" . However, it was from the first Methodist minister of the country Hosea Linge, called Ligeremaluoga of Kono in 1932 published the book "The Earstwhile Savage".
