Sir Michael Ogio GCMG CBE KStJ (* July 7, 1942 - † February 18, 2017 in Port Moresby ) was a Papua New Guinean politician . He was Governor General of Papua New Guinea from February 25, 2011 until his death .

Michael Ogio was Minister of Forestry in the Mekere Morauta government in 2000 and Deputy Prime Minister since May 2001. In Michael Somare's government , he was Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology from 2007 to 2011. He was party leader of the People's Democratic Movement Party and representative of Bougainville in the parliament of Papua New Guinea .

Ogio became acting Governor General after his predecessor Jeffrey Nape resigned on December 20, 2010 after a week in office. On January 14, 2011, he was elected Governor General by the Parliament of Papua New Guinea with 65 votes. His opponent, Pato Kakeraya, received 23 votes. Michael Ogio was sworn in on February 25, 2011. On February 1, 2017, Robert Dadae was elected as his successor. On February 18, 2017 - one week before the end of his term in office - he passed away after a long illness.
