Edward "Ted" Ramu Diro (born December 14, 1942 in Bogu , Rigo District , Central Province ) is a Papua New Guinean politician who was Deputy Prime Minister between 1990 and 1991, among other things.

Life

Diro was appointed Minister for Forests in 1985 by Prime Minister Paias Wingti in his first government. In 1986 he founded the People's Action Party (PAP) together with Serei Eri . In the course of a government reshuffle , he took over the post of Foreign Minister from Legu Vagi in 1986 , which he held until he was replaced by Aruru Matiabe in 1987.

In 1989 Diro was appointed Prime Minister Rabbie Namaliu's Minister of State for Special Tasks in his government. Subsequently, between 1990 and 1991 he held the functions of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Civil Service in the Namaliu government. During this time, a constitutional crisis broke out after he was charged and found guilty of corruption . According to the constitution, Serei Eri, who was now Governor General of Papua New Guinea , should have dismissed Diro, but he did not. This led to a fierce controversy, which ultimately led to the resignation of the governor-general.

Most recently Diro was the successor to John Orea from 1997 until his replacement by Ajax Bia in 1999 as governor of the Central Province. The Ted Diro Elementary School and the Ted Diro Primary School , both of which are located in Hohola, a suburb of Port Moresby, were named in his honor .
