Paradise garage

The Paradise Garage

The Paradise Garage was a character defining nightclub in New York City that existed from 1976 to 1987.

Founded by Michael Brody and music label boss Mel Cheren in a former parking garage at 84, King Street , the club has become an important meeting place for the gay black community. Basically no alcohol was served. This allowed (according to the legal situation) longer opening times until well into the next day. The club had a high-quality sound system and should put music and dancing in the foreground. A mix of early house and disco established itself in the club, later known as garage house , performed by resident DJ Larry Levan . Many live acts also had appearances here, includingGloria Gaynor , Patti LaBelle or Grace Jones .

After the club's activity ended, the building became a garage again, now for the Verizon Communications vehicle fleet .
