Parakoimomenos

Parakoimomenos (παρακοιμώμενος / parakoimṓmenos = close confidante of the emperor , literally the one who sleeps next to [the emperor's room] ) is the title of a high official in the Byzantine Empire . The office, usually held by a eunuch , was the highest and most influential that could be attained by a eunuch from the 9th to the 11th centuries.
