The Parc national de Plaisance is one of the currently 27 national parks in the Canadian province of Québec . There a parc national corresponds to what is called a provincial park in the other provinces . The park is operated by Sépaq ( French Société des établissements de plein air du Québec or English Society of outdoor recreation establishments of Quebec ).

The task of the park established in 2002 in the extreme southwest of the province on the north bank of the Ottawa , only 28.1 km² large park, is to preserve a small part of the wetlands (marais) of the Ottawa.

history

The earliest archaeological finds at the confluence of the Rivière de la Petite Nation and Rivière des Outaouais ( Ottawa River ) date back to the first settlement of the area by Paleo-Indians . Several excavations were recently carried out under the direction of Marcel Laliberté. Fur hunting and proselytizing began in the 17th century, and during the French period the area belonged to the Seigneurie de la Petite-Nation.

Flora and fauna

The area is an important stopover for the Canada goose , where the American bittern (petit blongios) , which is endangered in Canada, occurs.

Nowhere else in the province is the density of the beaver population so high. It is around 14 beaver colonies on 10 km². Trapping was still allowed from 1996 to 2001, and has been banned since then. The early decimated, meanwhile rapidly growing population allows research into the effects on the ecological environment.

Snapping turtles live in the park, but most of their offspring fall victim to raccoons and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis). Nevertheless, the species is not endangered in the park area.
