The Parcul Carol (Carol Park, also Freedom Park) is a local recreation area in Bucharest of about 36 hectares, which was from 1900 to 1906 on the occasion of the 40-year reign of the first Romanian king, Carol I (1881-1914, a member of the The Hohenzollern family ), designed and built by the French landscape architect Edouard Redont . The head of the building commission was Professor Constantin I. Istrati (1850-1918). This included a state exhibition with typical buildings from the various parts of the country and avenues, a lake and hills that were connected by romantic paths.

In the communist era after World War II, the architects Horia Maicu and Nicolae Cucu erected a monumental monument to the heroes of socialism here, which was to serve as a mausoleum for the top officials of the communist party and as a landmark. From the park entrance, a monumental axis with a staircase was built through the complex, thereby significantly changing its character. After the Romanian Revolution , the mausoleum was demolished in 1991.
