Upper and Lower Churches in Parechi

Parechi ( Georgian პარეხი , pʼɑrɛχɪ ) or Parechta ( პარეხთა , pʼɑrɛχtʰɑ ) is a medieval Orthodox monastery in the historically Georgian province of Tao-Klardschetien . Today this area belongs to the Turkish province of Artvin . The monastery is located about 15 kilometers as the crow flies northeast of the provincial capital Artvin .

Parechi is partly a cave monastery , but also includes some stone buildings. The monastery has been largely destroyed today, there are two stone churches (one upper and one lower) and some caves, the functions of which are still unclear. The Parechi Monastery was built in the 9th or 10th century. The Georgian monk Mikel von Parechi ( მიქელ პარეხელი , Mikel Paracheli) lived in Parechi Monastery , whose life has been described by other monks in Parechi.
