Parelli Natural Horsemanship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Parelli Natural Horsemanship , also known as Parelli or PNH, is a program designed to teach natural handling of domestic horses . The scientifically not evaluated program goes back to the horse trainer Pat Parelli.

In the USA, the Parelli Natural Horsemanship is one of the programs that established the approach of "careful" and "sensitive" horse training. Pat Parelli is known as one of the so-called horse whisperers , with Parelli and his wife being considered "masters of marketing and commercialization" of the training approach. Parelli's work is largely based on the basic works of Ray Hunt .

The program

Parelli Natural Horse-Man-Ship is a program designed to teach a natural approach to communicating with horses. Parelli's statement is: It is based on the natural behavior of horses in order to gain the horses' trust and respect in the horse-human relationship. PNH methods are mentally, emotionally and physically similar to the way horses communicate with one another in a herd. The aim is that people do not behave like humans or like predators, but like horses.

In order to achieve this goal, Parelli primarily uses the principle of so-called "negative reinforcement" through progressive pressure build-up to achieve a specific reaction of the horse, followed by pauses (i.e. a decrease in pressure) after the horse has responded correctly, in a controlled manner Environments. A characteristic of this is the increase in pressure in steps, called "phases". In this environment, the trainer and horse practice behavioral patterns, which are then later to be generalized. Basically there are seven games that are based on the behavior of a mare with her newborn foal and that the horses 'play all day and their entire life' (quotation from Pat Parelli in various videos).

As a basis for how which games should be played and which patterns should be used, one has to "read" the horse, find out its personality. Parelli coined the term "Horsenality" here.

The program itself is divided into 10 levels, of which only the first four are currently accessible, and four learning areas (savvys):

  • Level 1 (partnership): Establishing communication and security in dealing with the horse; Savvy On Line (groundwork on the rope)
  • Level 2 (harmony): building trust between man and horse; Savvy Freestyle (riding without constant rein contact)
  • Level 3 (refinement): refinement of the first two levels; Savvy Liberty (groundwork without rope)
  • Level 4 (versatility): Learning further skills that ultimately you can naturally induce the horse to do anything you want; Savvy Finesse (riding with fine rein contact)

history

The former rodeo rider Parelli developed his training program mainly on mules. He was one of the first to address the general public with his program and name and to establish training programs for horses as a brand. Parelli managed to become known worldwide with the program and to develop horse training into an industry. Parellis Natural Horsemanship now operates worldwide, trains trainers, publishes books, videos and large quantities of merchandise. Together with his wife, he tours the United States in a convoy of trucks, horses, dogs and employees in order to hold horse shows and win new customers.

Today the American attracts thousands in England as well as being the main attraction of Australia's largest horse show . The Humane Society of the United States awarded Parelli the 2009 Human Equine Man of the Year award for his program .

In collaboration with Parelli, Nate Bowers added preparatory exercises for driving horses in the Natural Horsemanship program. In the meantime, the program is also occasionally applied to other animal species, such as B. Elephants.
