Parliament Library

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary library is the name given to libraries that primarily serve to support parliamentary work . They collect information that is required and produced by the members of the respective parliament for their work. In some cases the Parliamentary Library also functions as a national library , such as the Library of Congress .

Parliamentary libraries are basically responsible for providing information to members of parliament and parliamentary groups and their staff. Some are also restricted or completely open to the public.

Modern parliamentary libraries offer their users access to their own stocks of printed and electronic media as well as external information sources ( specialist databases, etc.) in order to be able to convey the information necessary for political and parliamentary work quickly and at a high level.

Other services include a .:

  • conducting research and compiling materials on behalf of the user
  • the publication of lists of new acquisitions
  • the procurement of media at the request of the user
  • the loan for business use (service loan)
  • the creation of profile services (regular compilation of new books and articles on given topics).

In federal states such as the Federal Republic of Germany, both the national parliament and the state parliaments have their own libraries (library of the German Bundestag, state parliament libraries).
