The 1971 parliamentary election in Barbados to elect the members of the House of Assembly , the lower house of the Barbados Parliament , took place on September 9, 1971.

background

This choice was the first choice after the country gained independence. The election for the previous legislative period in 1966 took place before independence.

After twelve constituencies were formed in 1966, each with two members to be elected, this election was returned to 24 constituencies, each with one member to be elected.

Three parties ran for parliamentary elections. In addition to the ruling Democratic Labor Party (DLP), these were the Barbados Labor Party (BLP) and the Barbados National Party (BNP). These three parties put up a total of 48 candidates. There were also two independent candidates.

Election result

The DLP was able to increase the number of its mandates and won a total of 18 mandates. The previous Prime Minister, Erros Barrow , leader of the victorious DLP, was re-elected for a third five-year term.
