General election in Costa Rica 1974

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1974 general election in Costa Rica took place on February 3, 1974.

Election result

The election for the Asamblea Legislativa de Costa Rica - which took place on the same day as the presidential elections - resulted in the moderate reformist Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) losing its majority in parliament, despite maintaining its position as the largest party with 27 seats. The main political groups in the opposition included the Partido Unión Nacional (PUN), the anti-communist National Independence Party (PNI) and the Democratic Renewal (RD). Inflation in the country was discussed extensively as one of the most important issues of the election campaign.

The Supreme Electoral Court had banned the use of the words “Communist” and “Marxist” during the election campaign after right-wing forces claimed that such influences had invaded the country. Daniel Oduber Quiros was elected as the new president of the PLN.
