Daniel Oduber Quirós

Porfirio Ricardo José Luis Daniel Oduber Quirós (* 25. August 1921 in San José, Costa Rica; † 13. October 1991 in Escazú, Costa Rica) was a politician and of 8 May 1974 to 8 May 1978 President in Costa Rica .

Life

His parents were Ana María Quirós Quirós and Porfirio Oduber Soto. Oduber was a member of the Partido Liberación Nacional .

Oduber married in Paris Marjorie Elliot Sypher, daughter of Marjorie Sypher and Colin Fraser Elliott, a Canadian diplomat, and sister of Fraser Elliott. In this marriage Luis Adrián and Ana María Oduber Elliott were born.

He attended school in San José. He trained as an accountant and studied at the University of Costa Rica law and became a lawyer.

In 1946 he studied philosophy at McGill University in Canada and graduated with a Master of Arts. He studied law in Paris. Daniel Oduber spoke perfect English and French and read German and Italian. He did not complete a doctoral thesis, but was involved in politics in the 1940s. He was a member of the Centro para el Estudio de los Problemas Nacionales , a predecessor organization of the Partido Social Demócrata . On October 13, 1948, Daniel Oduber Quirós brought a machine gun from the Swiss Arms Neuhausen (SIG) to the Club del Partido Social Demócrata .

In the Junta Fundadora de la Segunda República (1948-1949), which was headed by José Figueres Ferrer , Oduber was general secretary. In 1949 Oduber was Costa Rica's representative to the United Nations. From 1949 to 1950 he was in charge of negotiations with the government of France. From 1953 to 1955 he was Costa Rica's ambulatory ambassador to Europe. From 1958 to 1962 he was a member of parliament for San José. In 1961, when the presidential candidate was nominated within the Partido Liberación Nacional , Francisco José Orlich Bolmarcich was preferred.

In the government from 1962 to 1964 Oduber was Foreign Minister and Minister of Culture in the government cabinet of Francisco José Orlich Bolmarcich. He was a member of the management board of the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo and the Instituto Nacional de Vivienda y Urbanismo .

In the 1966 presidential election he was the candidate of the Partido Liberación Nacional . He was defeated by José Joaquín Trejos Fernández , who was elected by a narrow margin.

Presidency

In the presidential election of 1974, his opponent was Fernando Trejos Escalante from the Partido Unificación Nacional . Oduber was elected. In 1976 he was elected a vice president of the SI . In 1985 he received the Premio Nacional de Historia for his work Raíces del Partido Liberación Nacional (the roots of the Partido Liberación Nacional)

Signature of Oduber

In December 2004 the heirs of Oduber donated the Finca La Flor in Guanacaste with 1,500 hectares to the Universidad Earth. Oduber's widow and children are the owners of Comercial Morazán and Edificio Morazán in San José.
