José Joaquín Trejos Fernández

José Joaquín Trejos Fernández (born April 18, 1916 in San José , † February 10, 2010 ibid) was a Costa Rican politician (PUN). He was President of Costa Rica from 1966 to 1970 .

José Trejos studied economics at the University of Chicago and taught for many years as a professor of economics at the Universidad de Costa Rica . He and his wife Clara Fonseca Guardia had five children.

Presidency

With no political history, José Trejos, who ran for a party alliance called Unificación Nacional ( National Association ), was elected president in 1966 against Daniel Oduber Quirós . During his presidency, a motorway (the carretera rústica ) to Puerto Limón was built, the Banco Popular was established, a municipal development law was passed and some important constitutional changes were made.

After his presidency, Trejos remained politically active. He published Ocho años en la política costarricense ( Eight Years in Costa Rican Politics ) and an autobiography called Por esfuerzo propio ( On Your Own ).
