The 2008 general election in New Zealand took place on November 8, 2008 around 120 seats in the House of Representatives . The New Zealand National Party , led by John Key , won by far the largest share of the seats. She formed a government with the help of ACT New Zealand , United Future New Zealand and the Māori Party . The New Zealand Labor Party , which had ruled for nine years, went into opposition. On November 19, 2008, John Key was sworn in as the successor to Helen Clark as Prime Minister of New Zealand .
