Parliamentary elections in the Republic of the Congo 2012
The 2012 parliamentary elections in the Republic of the Congo took place on July 15 and August 5, 2012 in the Central African Republic of the Congo . These elections determined the seats in the National Assembly of the Republic of the Congo . Officially, the ruling party Parti Congolais du Travail, headed by President Denis Sassou Nguesso , who has been in office for over 30 years, won more than 2/3 of the seats. Although 30 observers from the African Union were present, international observers and the opposition assume that the results are inconclusive and are based on massive election fraud.
Electoral system
It was planned that the 139 seats of the National Assembly in as many electoral districts would be determined by majority voting. In the constituencies in which no candidate received a majority of the votes in the first round, a second round was held, in which the candidate with the most votes received the seat. Candidates had to be at least 25 years old, a citizen of the Republic of the Congo and have no previous conviction. Of the 1,213 candidates, 124 were women and 1,089 were men. In three districts of the capital Brazzaville, the elections were not held because an explosion occurred immediately beforehand that cost 300 lives. Accordingly, 3 seats remained unoccupied. A court later granted the previous parliamentary representatives of the three districts the right to extend their term of office to the new legislative period .
Official results
Officially, the ruling party, Parti Congolais du Travail, more than doubled the number of its seats and won ten times as many seats as the largest opposition party, Mouvement Congolais pour la Démocratie et le Développement Intégral .
