The Parque Madrid Río is a public landscape park in the Spanish capital Madrid , located directly on the Manzanares River. It was created between 2006 and 2012 and was one of the most demanding greening projects in Europe, with an estimated cost of around four billion euros. For this purpose, the M-30 city motorway , which runs alongside the river, was tunnelled over several kilometers and relocated under today's park. This stretches over an area of around 120 hectares and is therefore slightly larger than the Parque del Retiro . The architects Team West 8 from the Netherlands and Mrio Arquitectos from Madrid were responsible for the planning .

In the media, this project was described as a “superlative urban development project” due to the necessary financial and material efforts, and it was sometimes viewed critically against the background of the public financial situation. So were z. B. erected more than 5500 new benches, 33 bridges built or renovated and more than 33,000 new trees planted. All of this “only” to improve the quality of life and inner-city green spaces . In the meantime, however, the park has become a magnet for both Madrilenians and tourists .
