The three- striped rainbow fish ( Melanotaenia trifasciata ( Latin : trifasciata - with three stripes)), also known as the banded rainbow fish , is a freshwater fish species from the rainbow fish family (Melanotaeniidae). It is native to streams and rivers in Arnhem Land in northern Australia's Northern Territory and on the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland .

features

The three-lined rainbow fish has a relatively high-backed body, is strongly flattened on the sides and is usually 12 to 13 cm long. The color is very variable. Depending on the origin, the back can be steel blue or dark blue, the sides yellowish, greenish yellow, bluish, greenish brown or olive brown and the fins deep red, reddish or brownish. The second dorsal fin and the anal fin are lined with black, the front edge of the first dorsal fin and the pelvic fins is black. The belly is silvery-whitish. A dark brown or blackish central band, bordered lightly above and below, is always clearly visible. It extends from the back of the eye to the base of the caudal fin. The adults have dark scales. Females are less colorful. Males show a glowing stripe on their foreheads during courtship.

habitat

The three-lined rainbow fish lives in clear, often fast-flowing rivers and streams as well as in muddy waterholes. The temperature in its living waters is between 22 and 30 ° C, the pH value between 5.2 and 7.0.
