The Party of National Unity ( Burmese တိုင်းရင်းသားစည်းလုံးညီညွတ်ရေးပါတီ , English National Unity Party ) is a political party in Myanmar , which socialist aligns.
The party was founded by the military junta on September 24, 1988 as the successor to the party of the Myanmar socialist program , which was dissolved as a result of the 8888 uprising , so that it could participate in the parliamentary elections on May 27, 1990. However, since the opposition National League for Democracy won the elections by a huge margin, the result was not recognized. The party was chaired by former officer Thar Kyaw until his death in 2005. He was followed by U Tun Yi, former commander in chief of the Myanmar army . After his death in 2014, Than Tin became the new chairman.
Reorganized in the 1990s by former Myanmar head of state U Ne Win (1911–2002) and other members, the National Unity Party put up 999 candidates for seats in the national and regional parliament in the criticized 2010 elections . In the lower house, the party, which had been insignificant for decades due to the lack of elections, received only 12 of the 325 seats in the upper house, 5 of the 168 seats in the upper house and 46 of the 661 seats in the parliament of the provinces and states. The newly founded Union Solidarity and Development Party , which was massively supported by the military junta , provided 80% of the MPs and the democratic opposition around 10%.
After the free parliamentary elections in 2015 , the party has only one MP in the upper house and none in the lower house.
