Partido Renovador Institucional Acción Nacional

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Partido Renovador Institucional Acción Nacional (Spanish for Institutional Renewal Party National Action , PRIAN ) is a conservative - populist party in Ecuador . Its founder and best-known representative is the entrepreneur Álvaro Noboa , who is considered the richest man in Ecuador. The party's chairman is Vicente Taiano and Noboas is the vice-presidential candidate in the 2006 elections.

The party emerged after Noboa, who was defeated in the runoff election to Christian Democrat Jamil Mahuad as a candidate for the populist Partido Roldosista Ecuatoriano (PRE) in the presidential elections , fell out with the founder and political leader of the PRE, Abdalá Bucaram , and founded his own party . It was officially founded in April 2002 and ran in the presidential and parliamentary elections in October of the same year. Noboa achieved the second-best result as the top candidate in the first ballot with 17.4% of the votes and was defeated in the second ballot with 46% Lucio Gutiérrez . In the parliamentary elections, the party won 10 seats straight away and became the fourth largest faction in the National Congress. After the regional elections in 2004, the party provides the prefect of Imbabura province and the mayors of 19 of the country's 219 canton capitals, including Latacunga , the capital of Cotopaxi province .

Noboa ran again in the 2006 presidential election and surprisingly achieved the best result of all candidates in the first ballot with 26.8% of the vote. In the second ballot, however, he lost for the third time, this time to the left-wing Rafael Correa .

At the beginning of the 2007–2011 legislative period, the PRIAN had the largest block of representatives in the National Congress with 28 members and also the President of Parliament with Jorge Cevallos . Overall, the party received around 24.4 percent of the vote in the 2006 parliamentary elections, which were held parallel to the presidential elections. In the most populous provinces of the coastal region, Manabí and Guayas , it reached 34.3 and 33.7 percent and became the strongest party; in the most populous province of the Andean region, it took second place with 20.2 percent. Overall, the PRIAN was the strongest party in five of the 22 provinces (Guayas, Manabí, Carchi , Imbabura and Esmeraldas ). The elected MP Annabella Azín, wife Álvaro Noboas, received the highest number of personal votes in the country in the province of Guayas.

In the course of the political crisis surrounding the calling of a referendum on a new constituent assembly, in the course of which members of the PRIAN voted for the removal of the chairman of the Supreme Electoral Court, all but three members of the PRIAN as well as most of the members of the rest of the group voted for the measure Voting parties are declared dismissed by the electoral court due to obstruction of an ongoing election process Cevallos and Azín were not deposed. After the term of office of the judges of the Constitutional Court, which had declared the deposition of the deputies to be invalid, was also ended in connection with this matter and had already been declared invalid, the deposition remained de facto valid. The homepage of the National Congress therefore showed only five members formally belonging to the PRIAN in June 2007, the other substitute members were listed as non-attached. Congress President Cevallos was expelled from the party on June 10, 2007 because of his inadequate behavior in relation to the deposed MPs.

Like all populist parties in the country, the party acts as a social reformist and also emphasizes the Christian orientation of its leader. In particular, a comprehensive housing program for poor families, which is already being carried out on a small scale by Noboa's private foundation Cruzada Nueva Humanidad , is one of the promoted measures in the event of the government takeover. Otherwise, the party's program relies heavily on private entrepreneurship. Since the candidates are mainly confidants of noboas and entrepreneurs, the party is seen by many as being clientist and oriented towards entrepreneurship, especially in the coastal region.

Noboa is known for waging the most expensive election campaigns of any candidate, including handing out wheelchairs, computers, groceries and cash in slums.
