partita

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Partita (Italian, from partire "to share") is the name for the individual part ( movement ) of a dance sequence or series of variations. Since the 17th century, the term partita (or French part ) has also been used generally for instrumental pieces or for sequences of movements in the sense of the suite . The best-known example of this is the first part of Johann Sebastian Bach's piano exercise with six partitas. Another form is the chorale partita, in which the chorale theme is followed by figured variations . For Bach's partitas for solo violin, see Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin .
