Partition
Partition (Latin partitio division, division, structure) stands for:
- the division of the country in politics
- in set theory a subdivision of sets, see partition (set theory)
- in number theory the partition function
- in graph theory a special decomposition of the node set of a graph, see k-partiter graph
- the subdivision of data carriers, see partition (data carrier)
- a member (partition) of the file system (library) on IBM mainframes, see Partitioned Data Set ("PDS" for short)
Partitioning (also partitioning ) stands for:
- generally for the act of splitting; a partitioning can also mean the resulting system of partitions .
- a decision problem from theoretical computer science using mathematical number theory, see partitioning problem
- the division of a circuit into partial circuits (partitions) when designing the layout or chip
- the division of a server for simultaneous use by several operating system instances , see server partitioning
