Paschasius of Arles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paschasius von Arles ( French Paschase d'Arles ; † around 588 ) was the archbishop of Arles according to the episcopal diptychs . However, its existence is controversial.

Two more recent copies of the bishop's diptychs ( diptyques épiscopaux ) are known, both of which name a paschasius between the bishops Licerius and Virgilius. However, nothing more is known about this incumbent. Its existence is sometimes questioned. Gregory of Tours writes in his historical work that after the death of Licerius, the abbot Virgilius of Autun immediately succeeded him as bishop; he does not name a Paschasius. The Gallia christiana novissima also has no text in which it is mentioned.

William E. Klingshirn therefore comes to the conclusion in his work on Caesarius von Arles that there is no basis for an episcopate of Paschasius and that his name is a subsequent interpolation . Charles-Louis Richard and Jean Joseph Giraud in their directory of bishops and Henri Léonard Bordier in his edition of the work of Gregory of Tours, on the other hand, assumed in the 19th century that Bishop Paschasius might have existed, but only for a very short time in Was office. The raging plague epidemic ( Justinian plague ) that was raging in those years could then be considered as the reason for the short term in office .
