Eastern Roman Empire
- April 18 : The announcement that all military assignments would be cut by a quarter sparked revolts among the Eastern Roman troops on the Persian front at Easter . Since the Persians are bound by barbarian incursions in the Caucasus , they cannot take advantage of the situation. Philippikos , who had previously exercised command in the east, is again commander-in-chief of the Oriental Army (see also Roman-Persian Wars ).
- Summer: The Eastern Roman Empire triumphs over the Sassanid Empire in the Battle of Martyropolis .
- Conquest of the Slavs in the Balkans : An Eastern Roman campaign under the command of the general Priskos fails in the Balkans. This encourages the Avars to advance to Herakleia on the Marmara Sea .
