Pasque Veronesi

Place where the “Veronese Easter” began.

The Pasque Veronesi ("Veronese Easter") were a revolt of the Veronese against the French occupation in 1797. They lasted from April 17th, an Easter Monday, to April 25th, the day of the Evangelist Mark , patron saint of the Republic of Venice .

The Pasque Veronesi ended with the defeat of the insurgents. Leaders were executed, Verona had to pay heavy damages and many signs of Veronese or Venetian rule were destroyed. Veronese cultural assets were looted, including tombstones from Roman times (from the Museo Lapidario Maffeiano ), manuscripts from seven centuries (from the Biblioteca capitolare di Verona ) and paintings by well-known artists such as Titian ('Pala dell'Assunta') and Paolo Veronese (' Il martirio del Santo ').

The Pasque Veronesi have been compared to the Sicilian Vespers , but are less well known (probably because of their failure).
