The Pastýřská stěna , also Ovčí stěna (German: Schäferwand ) is a sandstone rock massif on the banks of the Elbe in the urban area of Děčín ( Tetschen ) in the Czech Republic .

history

Today linguists ascribe the name to the German name Schiefe Wand . The current Czech name is a translation of the German name Schäferwand.

The Schäferwand had already become a popular excursion destination in the 19th century due to its striking view. Therefore, it was decided to build a wooden shelter hut, which was replaced in 1905 in the form of a romantic castle in massive construction and still stands on the shepherd's wall today. From the terrace of the restaurant there is a picturesque view of the Elbe valley and the Děčín Castle opposite .

After 1945, which was on the plateau Zoo of Decin created. Inside the rock, an elevator was built from Elbstrasse to the mountain plateau, but it is currently out of service (2006).

A tunnel on the Dresden – Děčín railway line runs through the rock .

A via ferrata ("Via ferrata Pastyrska Stena") has been laid out on the Schäferwand since 2012 and opened in 2014. Several routes with a length of up to 170 meters overcome the almost 100 vertical meters of the rock face.

For hikers, a red marked hiking trail leads from the Děčín train station to the summit and on to the Hohe Schneeberg .
