Pathovar

A pathovar (from Greek pathos "suffering", "illness", latin varius "different, diverse") is a bacteria -derived or a group of strains having the same properties, within the sort due to different pathogenicity can be distinguished from each other.

Pathovars are listed as a third or fourth addition to the binomial species name. The bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis, for example, which causes lemon cancer, has different pathovars with different host specializations : X. axonopodis pv. Citri is one of them, the abbreviation “pv.” Means “pathovar”.

The virulent strains of human pathogens also have pathovars, such as Escherichia coli ( EHEC , EPEC ).
