Patiens (saint)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patiens († 4th century in Metz ) was an early bishop of Metz and a saint .

The legend reports that Patiens was a Greek and a student of the evangelist John . It was revealed to him in a miraculous way that the diocese of Metz had become vacant due to the death of Felix, and he then sent Patiens to Gaul to succeed him. Johannes gave him one of his teeth. Arrived in Metz, Patiens had built a chapel and had John's tooth venerated as a relic there.

In fact, the name "Patiens" is of Roman, not Greek origin and a direct relationship to John is chronologically impossible, since the Patiens term of office is dated to the 4th century, which means that the year 152, which the legend assumes, is unhistorical .

Patiens is venerated as a saint. His feast day is January 8th .
