The Patons Country Narrow Gauge Railway (PCNGR) is a 30 km long, narrow - gauge, single-track heritage railway line with a gauge of 2 feet (610 mm) in KwaZulu-Natal , South Africa .
The Patons Country Narrow Gauge Railway was rebuilt in 2000 from the Allwoodburn marshalling yard near Ixopo to Madonella station near Umzimkhulu on the route of an old branch line branching off from the Umzinto – Donnybrook narrow-gauge railway , which had been shut down around 1985.
Since the railway line had been dismantled in places after the closure, it had to be completely rebuilt. Gradually, locomotives and wagons were acquired from various disused railway companies in Natal . Initially, the museum train ran from Ixopo (Allwoodburn Siding) to Carisbrooke. The line has now been extended from Umzinkulu to a new terminus in the township of Madonella near Umzimkulu .
The following locomotives are stationed in Ixopo:
- NG G11 No. 55 of the South African Class NG G11 2-6-0 + 0-6-2 . This locomotive No. 55 was built in 1925, and was previously used mainly on the Estcourt - Weenen route.
- Two Avonside sugar cane locomotives
- Two four-cylinder diesel Hunslet shunting locomotives .
- Two diesel locomotives 91-006 and 91-007 acquired in 2015
Patons Narrow Gauge also operated the Banana Express on the Alfred County Railway's line, which was shut down after a storm surge in 2006. But there is also a train pulled by a small diesel locomotive, the Hamba Wehelie Express, on a short section of the former Banana Express between the stations of Paddock and Plains.
