Weenen ( Afrikaans for "to cry") is a city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located in the Inkosi Langalibalele community in the Uthukela district . It was founded in 1838 by the Voortrekkers shortly after the Weenen massacre of the Zulu on the Boers . The massacre was also the reason for the name. Weenen is the second oldest city in the province. In 2011 it had 3,126 inhabitants.

Vegetables, citrus fruits and peanuts are grown in meadows.

Attractions

  • The Weenen Nature Reserve is a nature park in typical grassland with acacias and occasional bushes. Mammals in the park include rhinos, giraffes, hyenas, jackals, porcupines and various species of African buck, such as the bushbuck , the reedbuck and the ibex . There are over 230 different species of birds.
  • In Weenen Museum objects can be seen of the Voortrekkers. The building was built in 1838 by Voortrekker guide Andries Pretorius and served as a post office and prison before the museum was established.
  • The Thukela Biosphere Reserve is a biosphere reserve established by over 30 private landowners to bring nature conservation and agriculture together.
