Patrick H. Diamond

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patrick H. Diamond is an American theoretical plasma physicist .

Diamond received his PhD in 1979 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( Theory of Phase Space Density Granulation in Magnetoplasma ). He is a professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He is also the director of the Institute for Fusion Theory at the National Fusion Research Institute in Daejeon , South Korea , where the KSTAR tokamak is operated.

In 2011 he and Akira Hasegawa and Kunioki Mima received the Hannes Alfvén Prize for important contributions to the theory of turbulent transport in plasmas such as self-organization of zonal flow, the shear decorrelation mechanism and hunter-prey models for bifurcations in plasmas. In addition to applications in controlled nuclear fusion, he also deals with astrophysical applications.

In 1986 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 1988 he became a Sloan Research Fellow .
