Patuxai

Patuxai ( Laotian : ປະ ຕູ ໄຊ , [pátǔː sáj] "Gate of Victory", French also Monument des Morts ) is a triumphal arch in the Laotian capital Vientiane . The 49 meter high monumental building stands at the end of the Xang boulevard.

Patuxai was named "Monument to the Heroes of the Royal Army" in the 1960s. H. Erected for Laos' independence from France (1949). When the Pathet Lao took over power in 1975 , the huge concrete structure became nameless for 20 years. It was commonly known simply as the Anousavali (Monument). On the 20th anniversary of the seizure of power in 1995, the triumphal arch was given the new dedication “The Heroes of August 23, 1975” (day of the takeover of power in Vientiane).

Confectioner turrets and sculptures from Indian mythology decorate the viertorigen concrete. The numbers four and seven appear magically in the dimensions of the structure: the four columns measure 4 × 4 meters, the overall structure is 7 × 7 meters high.

The monumental building is still unfinished, although the Laotian government has repeatedly approved new funds. Cement, which the USA had actually intended to build an airfield for the Vietnam War , was used here. In addition, building material was diverted into other canals and installed in villas and residential buildings.

The construction is currently of particular interest to tourism. You can climb the upper platforms, which allow a panoramic view of the city, for a fee. The inner floors house numerous tourist shops.
