Pau (unit)

The pau was a measure of length in the pre-colonial Central African state of Loango with three different measures. The measure was important in barter on the Angolan coast with the Europeans. Silk and linen goods were traded for gold sand.

  • For the chief and his minions 1 pau = 25 inches (Wiener = 26.340 millimeters ) = 658.5 millimeters
  • lower officials 1 Pau = 21 2/5 inches (Wiener) = 563.68 millimeters
  • Private individuals 1 Pau = 16 ½ inches (Wiener) = 434.61 millimeters
