Paul van Zelm

Paul van Zelm (* 1964 in Alkmaar ) is a Dutch horn player and professor at the Cologne University of Music .

Van Zelm gained his first musical experience in the brass band, where he first played the trumpet and trombone and then switched to the horn. His teacher was a horn player at the Koninklijke Luchtmachtkapel.

He studied horn and natural horn at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam with Adriaan van Woudenberg and at the Folkwang University in Essen with Hermann Baumann . In addition, he already played under famous conductors such as Eugen Jochum , Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein during his studies .

He received his first engagement in the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he is still active again as a solo horn player. In 1993 he became 1st principal horn player of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra and the following year 1st principal horn player of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Van Zelm is also a member of the Amsterdam Bach Soloists and the Dutch Wind Ensemble and appears as a soloist with various well-known orchestras.

Van Zelm mainly plays a Paxman triple horn. He also has a horn made by Herbert Fritz Knopf and a double horn Alexander model 103.

Paul van Zelm has been Professor of Horn at the Cologne University of Music since 1999 .
