Pausylypos
Pausylypos ( ancient Greek Παυσύλυπος ) was a Greek silversmith who worked in Thessaloniki in the middle of the 4th century .
The signature of the pausylypos can be found on several pieces of the Kaiseraugst silver treasure , which was found in Kaiseraugst from 1961 to 1962 . The most important work signed by him is the octagonal Achilles plate, on which eleven scenes from the youth of the hero Achilles are shown. Other pieces signed by him, such as a simple mug or a bowl without decorations, are rather insignificant.
It is noticeable that his signature is engraved in some pieces, but stamped in others. Because of the stamp, it was questioned whether Pausylypos was actually the smith of the respective pieces. It is possible that he was the owner of a workshop or some kind of inspector who had to monitor the quality of the silverware made in Thessaloniki.
