PcAnywhere was remote maintenance software from Symantec that was offered as part of a suite of computer programs or individually. The program enables remote maintenance of personal computers and servers via a network or with a dial-up connection via modem . PcAnywhere has been released for the DOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Pocket PC operating systems.

history

The first version of pcAnywhere 1.0 for DOS was originally developed by Dynamic Microprocessor Associates in 1986. A few years later, Dynamic Microprocessor Associates was acquired by Symantec in 1991 and the program was renamed Norton pcAnywhere. In March 1993, Symantec released Norton pcAnywhere 1.0 for Windows.

Problems

In January 2012, Symantec, the manufacturer of pcAnywhere, announced a security issue caused by data theft in 2006 and requested users to suspend use of the software until a solution was found and new secure code was available, while the code was disclosed on February 7, 2012 and was now distributed over the BitTorrent network. Symantec responded with a series of cumulative hotfixes on pcAnywhere versions 12.0.x, 12.1.x, and 12.5.x. The hotfixes addressed the issues that Symantec believed were identified in the source code . Symantec has also released hotfixes for pcAnywhere versions 12.5.x and 12.6.x that were bundled with Symantec Management Suites . A full cumulative patch was released as a service pack on April 11, 2012. Symantec gave free upgrades to all customers who had a previous version of Symantec pcAnywhere from the late 1990s.

In May 2014. Symantec pcAnywhere for the end of life, and November 3, 2015, the end of the support announced and has, according to its FAQ "currently no plans to introduce a replacement remote control product." In November 2014, Symantec recommended end users of the single product to switch to the Bomgar product instead . The functionality of pcAnywhere was still included in the IT Management Suite (ITMS) package .
