Pegon (ڤيڬون) is an extended Arabic alphabet developed for the Javanese language .

history

Pegon originated under the influence of the Arab-Islamic culture and was mainly used by the Santri . Pegon was next to the Javanese script until before the arrival of the Danes, one of the two predominantly religiously defined script systems in Java .

Pegon was mainly, but not exclusively, used for scriptures of religious content. In addition to religious textbooks, religious poems ( singir ), local wisdom and healing methods and sex-educational texts have been handed down in Pegon. Pegon seems to have been used for all purposes, while the use of the Javanese script was limited to official reports. Since Pegon was also used in teaching, this font was more familiar to the population.

Like the Arabic script of the Arabic language, Pegon is a consonant script that can be vocalized with bookmarks. In the Pegon script, texts were also written in the Sundanese language .
