description

Peloneustes philarchus

Peloneustes philarchus ( Richard Lydekker , 1889) had a body length of about 3 meters. As is typical of this group, he had a streamlined build and strong paddle-shaped legs. The broad head had a pointed snout and the jaw had only 15 pairs of teeth. The teeth were less sharp than other plesiosaurs, but stronger to grab cephalopods or to break the shells of ammonites. The strong neck was short and had only 20 vertebrae. Head and neck were the same length. The front fins were shorter than the rear pair of fins. The weight was about 100 kilograms. Peloneustes philarchus presumably fed on fish , cephalopods and ammonites . With wing-like movements he was able to maneuver very well and quickly in the water.
