Penkill Castle

Penkill Castle is a castle near the Scottish village of Old Dailly in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Members of the Boyd clan acquired the lands in the early 16th century. A small tower house , the nucleus of Penkill Castle, was built there towards the end of the century. It was not until the 17th century, around 1628, that the building was expanded to its present size. In the centuries that followed, Penkill Castle fell into disrepair and was described as a ruin in 1857. At that time it was extensively restored and a wing on the east side and a stair tower were added.

Penkill Castle played a minor role in the history of the British Pre-Raphaelites . In the late 1850s, Pre-Raphaelite artist William Bell Scott began an association with Alice Boyd, whose brother at the time was the Laird. Scott visited Penkill often and once painted a series of murals illustrating James I's poem The Kingis Quair in the stairwell. He died in Penkill on November 22, 1890.

After the castle had been owned exclusively by the Boyd family for centuries, it was finally sold to the US businessman Elton Eckstrand in the 20th century . He sold Penkill Castle in 1992 to the Canadian chemist of Scottish descent Don Brown . An attempt by the Scottish heritage authorities to buy the castle failed due to a lack of funds. It is speculated that the purchase price will be around £ 400,000. About a year later, Brown sold the property to Patrick Dromgoole , then chairman of HTV Wales . The purchase price has not been published but is believed to have been around £ 650,000.
