Pentaho is a collection of business intelligence - software that in a basic version open source is. In 2007, Pentaho was counted among the ten most important open source projects in the business sector by Infoworld. It covers the usual areas of ETL , reporting , OLAP / analysis and data mining . The software is completely developed in Java .

The software has been developed by Pentaho Corporation since 2004. Pentaho was bought by Hitachi Data Systems in 2015.

Components

The software consists of different components: The reporting component emerged from the open source project JFreeReport . The OLAP / Analysis component is the Mondrian open source project (part of the Pentaho project since February 2007). Pentaho Data Integration (PDI) was also an independent open source project under the name Kettle. PDI is an ETL tool with connection options to different databases. In addition, there are other plug-ins from the partner environment for various systems such as SAP (ProERPconn) or Navision (NaviX Table Output). Pentaho Data Mining emerged from the Weka project at Waikato University in New Zealand. The Pentaho BI Platform forms the front end of the BI suite and is a proprietary development by Pentaho.

Versions

The Pentaho Open Source BI Suite is offered in different versions. There is a free, open source version with limited functionality. Different chargeable variants offer additional functions. Two software versions are currently being maintained, 8.3 and 7.1.
