The Pentax ME was introduced in 1976 as the world's most compact single-lens reflex camera for 24 × 36 mm film format.

The introduction of the Pentax ME was a bold move by Pentax towards automation, as the aperture priority (Av) camera only had a single exposure mode. The photographer set the aperture, the camera selected the shutter speed accordingly. A +/- 2 EV exposure compensation was the only means by which the photographer could influence the exposure. In addition, there was a mechanical speed setting of 1/100 s, but this was only intended as a stopgap if the batteries were empty. Metering was not available in this mode. The selector lever around the release button had four positions: L (Lock), Auto, 100X (1 / 100s, X-Sync) and B.

The ME housing was black, the upper and lower housing cover chrome-plated and available in black. A ME SE (Special Edition) model variant was later introduced with brown leather. The camera has a hot shoe on top of the prism and a self-timer. The viewfinder was large and bright, larger than the Pentax K range of cameras introduced the year before.

Together with the ME and its sister camera MX, the SMC Pentax-M series of compact lenses for the K bayonet was introduced.

The ME was replaced in 1979 by the successor model Pentax ME Super and the simpler Pentax MV .
