Perch Light

The Perch Light is a beacon in the Firth of Clyde across from West Quay in the Scottish city of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde . In 1990 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

description

The beacon is located on a small, rocky tidal island called "The Perch". It is about 90 m away from the port facilities on the south bank of the Firth of Clyde. While Historic Scotland give a construction time in the 1860s, in other sources a construction around 1890 is recorded. The building is still in its original state. It consists of a slightly tapered, low, cast iron cylinder, which is fixed on a stone, stepped foundation. The island and foundation are only visible at low tide. On it sits a lantern with triangular glasses and a balcony that closes in a dome. The tower, painted in a checkered pattern in black and white, is accessible from the island via a steel staircase. On land, a little downriver is the taller lighthouse on West Quay , which is similarly worked.
