Spawning rash is a change in the epidermis that occurs in certain fish , especially in males, during the spawning season . Among the Central European fish, the spawning rash occurs mostly only in some male carp fish (Cypriniformes) and salmon fish (Salmonidae). The exception is e.g. B. the blue, here both Rogner and Milchner get a spawning rash.

The spawning rash is mostly formed on the head of the (male) fish under the influence of sex hormones. It usually consists of granular or vesicular, relatively hard skin protuberances. At least in some species, the males rub them on the females' bodies, which are likely to be sexually stimulated. The spawning rash is therefore not a disease, and this skin change has no effect on the quality and taste of the meat.

After the spawning season, the spawning rash disappears until the next spawning season.
