The Ongi ( Mongolian Онги гол Ongi Gol ; Russian Онги-Гол Ongi-Gol ) is a river in southern Mongolia .

Originally the river was 435 kilometers long, making it the tenth longest in Mongolia. It rises in the Changai Mountains and runs through the Gobi desert until it flows into the lake Ulaan Nuur ( Mongolian Улаан нуур ), whose name literally means "Red Lake".

According to press reports from 2005, the river dried up for the first time in 1998. However, there are already information in older literature about regular drying up. In 2001, those affected founded the "Ongi River Movement" to make politicians aware of the problem of additional water abstraction. The water in the headwaters of the river is used to wash out gold. According to the Mongolian Ministry of the Environment, whose minister belongs to the party of the owner of one of the larger water consumers on Ongi Gol, global warming is mainly to blame. The initiative was successful because some companies had to close, although some of them continue to work illegally.

The town of Arwaicheer , the aim center of Öwörchangai , as well as several sum centers and the Ongiin Chiid monastery are located on the Ongi .
