Permafrost boundary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A permafrost (sometimes permafrost boundary ) is a geographical boundary of the occurrence of permafrost . This limit exists in principle on both hemispheres around the poles and as an altitude limit in numerous high mountains around the world. In the southern polar region, the border is currently largely in the ocean. The observed shift in the permafrost boundary towards the pole, or towards greater heights in the mountains, is associated with climate change .
