Pernelle Flamel

Pernelle Delamere Flamel (also Perenelle , * 1320 or 1340; † September 11, 1397 , according to other information 1402 or 1412) is considered a generous benefactress who invested her wealth in churches and hostels. She was the wife of Nicolas Flamel , a wealthy Parisian scribe , whom she married in 1355 after being twice widowed.

According to legends that first appeared in the sixteenth century, like her husband Nicolas, she is said to have earned a reputation as a successful alchemist . At her death in 1397, she is said to have left her husband a fortune of 5,300 livres .

A street in the 4th arrondissement of Paris has been named after her since 1851 , the Rue Pernelle . There is also a street named after her husband Nicolas in the immediate vicinity.

As a fictional character, Pernelle Flamel found its way into Joanne K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as well as into the Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott .
